Well, I do think our heroes are going to survive, though at this point I think everyone else surviving is very much up in the air. And I very much think you're right that the universe will take care of itself--I think FWR's key mistake is that he assumes that he has to (and has the right to) interfere in the order of things, when the order of things was going along just fine without him.
As I was saying to chibiyuuto, it's definitely time to put these two series to bed, awesome as they are. Hopefully both of them will be finished by the end of the year; as you say, they've totally been dragging.
In some ways I almost don't like reading the chapters as they come out; it's much more engaging to read the tankoubon than to have to keep waiting weeks, sometimes, between these short updates.
