It's that season of the year again (namely the season to be overly generous to ourselves, our loved ones, and yea, the entire world), and I am posting a wishlist for the first time ever.[personal profile] fish_echo explains the guidelines better than I ever could on this entry (which is also her wishlist).

  • Filk of [personal profile] copperbadge 's The Dead Isle. If you haven't read this book, it is a first draft of a steampunk novel-of-awesomeness, what are you waiting for? There are two chapters which feature songs worthy of filking, the chapter with the sea shanty and the chapter with the adaptation of "Charlie on the MTA." I should note that the second is from Chapter 39, and thus rather spoilery. But, OMG. Filk of these needs to exist. ETA: [personal profile] jonquil talks about the late writer of "Charlie on the MTA" here.
  • Donations to the CBLDF or to the OTW. Fair use, fanworks, and free speech forever! Or, honestly, to the charity of your choice. Tonight I donated a copy of Sabriel to my county's foster home system, and felt good about both decisions. I am very much a believer in what one does coming back to one. Even if the good do die young.
  • Recommendations! It is my goal for 2010 to read more non-mainstream sff, particularly by chromatic writers, and particularly by the WisCon Guests of Honor (I'm very much hoping to go to Wiscon, OMG! Hopefully the money and the hotel situation will work out). And I am always on the lookout for intelligent, intellectually meaty genre fiction. Not to mention, fanfic! I have recently fallen in to the rabbit-hole of Stargate Atlantis (I blame the AO3; I stumbled on the fic during performance testing of the servers XD) and I'm also on the lookout for recs for quality NCIS fic that isn't on the AO3. But, honestly, I don't really care about spoilers, so anything you've read that's amazing, I'd like to hear about it.
...And that's it, really. There are always books I could ask for, but you know, I totally have books from seven years ago sitting in boxes in my closet waiting to be read (to say nothing of manga). Trying to read them has been my New Year's resolution two years running.

Have you ever read anything by Larissa Lai? She works between Chinese mythology, Canlit and sf, making for some very interesting reading. I taught her book "Salt Fish Girl" in a Canadian Multiculturalism class and my students loved it. "When Fox Is a Thousand," is also supposed to be really good (and has references to Blade Runner!) but that one's still on my wishlist.

Sounds awesome. I wonder what my odds are of being able to track down her books here are. Low, I'd bet. I'll have to see if I can get one of her books when I order the new Michelle West book from Bakka Phoenix.

Thanks!

I initially read "Recommendations!," and thought "lulz, I hope her school(s) don't have rolling admissions or it's probably a bit rude/late for that...."

I miss my life.

"And you will say to yourself, how did I get here? And you will say to yourself, my god, what have I done?"

I think I know a little of how you feel.
