if only in my dreams
Dec. 18th, 2009 22:37My sister is home from Portland (Oregon) and has brought the Christmas spirit with her, in the form of one of our day-long Christmas cookie-baking marathons of insanity and hilarity. It's good she did, though, since yesterday I depressed myself so bad wandering around the Christmas giftwrap section in Target than when I got back into my car I started crying at Bob Dylan's "Blowing in the Wind." Which is completely out of character for me. It was good, though, since it forced me to acknowledge that I just am not looking forward to Christmas like I usually do. (For those of you who are new to this journal, my mother, who loved Christmas a lot, died of cancer in April.) And for the same reason I am actually glad to be going to Milwaukee to be with the relatives. If we were having Christmas here I think I'd be a total wreck.
My temp job ended Wednesday, and today when I woke up it felt like a holiday, since all three of us were home (my dad took the day off to go to the courthouse to get a surrogate's certificate so he could get the blue car put in his name, since the title is still in my mom's name, so he could get it registered. but he lost the title, so he has to wait until Monday or Tuesday). Yes, funny story! I was on my way home from Philly Wednesday night when I realized that I had just driven past a cop, so I slowed down and drove slightly closer to the speed limit, but noticed there was a cop behind me in the other lane several lights later, and that he seemed to be following me. So, yes, he and the cop behind him put on their flashers, I was pulled over, and then...the insurance card had expired six days previous! And he had pulled me over because the car's registration expired in June! But the fact that I have never had any points or tickets--first time getting pulled over in nearly six years driving--and that I did not freak out at all stood me in good stead, I think. I got off with a $54 ticket for driving an unregistered vehicle, and the cop let me take it home rather than towing it, as he legally could have done.
So the last batch of cookies is in the oven as I write this (finally--we started at noon, mind you), and we are settling in to wait for the advent of the snowpocalypse. I'll believe it when I see it. I don't even have the energy to tell the "three days from transcript hell" story just now. I'll wait until I've finished up two of my last three apps, which...looks like it will happen tomorrow. Along with holiday cards, gingerbread persons, and decorating the tree. Fa la la la...

It's good she's here. We totally would not have decorated the tree if not for her, either, though she claims she only did it for me.
At this point I think we might have more snow than Milwaukee. No idea whether here or there is warmer, though.
