Yuletide brings all the great writing to the yard.

Men Like Us -- Sherlock Holmes
Holmes/Watson, the reality of history.

Coincidence: The Tale of a Non-Case -- Sherlock Holmes
Holmes/Watson, pre-slash, Mycroft approves.

The Mechanical Heart -- Sherlock Holmes
Holmes/Watson, in the spirit and style of the books. Oh, brilliant.

The Terror from Bohemia: Being the Reminiscences of John H. Watson, M.D., in the Year of the Old Ones 745 -- Neil Gaiman's "A Study in Emerald", which can be read in full for free here (YOU SHOULD IT'S GREAT)
Awesome story continuing Gaiman's crossover of Holmes, Watson, Chthulu and Adler. That might be an OT4, actually.

Packet Switching -- Anthropomorphic Web 2.0
LJ/Fandom/DW. This might be the fic of Yuletide 09 for me, because, yeah, it's totally like this in real life.

Red -- Little Red Riding Hood
A modern update of the fairy tale. Red is awesome.

Three Christmases with Miss Honey -- Matilda
An awesome post-canon fic, as well as an explanation for Matilda's powers. Awesome.

Plato and Aristotle -- My Fair Lady (1964)
Fandom makes the Yuletide gay, believably.

All of Denmark -- Hamlet
A WWII modernization; quietly brilliant.

Five stories the Reader never began -- If on a Winter's Night a Traveler/Yuletide RPF
This might be the story of Yuletide 09 for me. It is genius.

Piano e Forte -- Composer RPF
Britten/Pears, terribly realistic and sweeter for it.

The Reservoir -- Sufjan Stevens songfic, "The Predatory Wasp of the Palisades Is Out to Get Us!"
I'd highly recommend listening to the song, and then giving this wonderful explication a spin.

Thousand Voices, One Fight -- Janelle Monae's awesome album Metropolis: The Chase Suite
post-album, the revolution draws nigh

Synthesis Soul Song -- Janelle Monae's awesome album Metropolis: The Chase Suite
pre-album, Cindi before her fate. This reminds me of something I read recently, but I can't think what. It's great regardless.

Metropolis: Nth Edition -- The Big O
Dorothy remembers, and decides.

imagined kingdoms -- Coldplay's "Viva la Vida"
I dislike Coldplay, but this may be their best song, and the fic is an interesting take on it.

The Forest -- The Decemberists' The Hazards of Love
A brilliant explication of the album-opera.

In the City of Blades and Holdfasts -- Amanda Palmer, "The Astronaut"
A brilliant story from a brilliant song, with a brilliant meta-textual conceit tucked inside it, to boot.

Slightly belated, but I actually made a mental note that I needed to come back and comment on this one, because you gave my happy little silly story (Packet Switching) quite the compliment. So thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it! :D

omg, Dorothy fic!

I loved her character so much. It was so nice to find characters like her and Angel in what looked like it was going to be just another mecha show.

Not to mention the lovely art deco aesthetic.

I love that show so much! It was so cool and strange and unconventional.

I know!

For a series designed by committee specifically to sell toys, it sure was a creative plot with some very original characters.

A curiosity: did you read other novels by Italo Calvino? My favourite one is The Nonexistent Knight (though at school we read many excerpts from his works).

That is still the only Calvino I've read, though I'm a big fan of Umberto Eco, whose books are similar in some ways, I think.

Oh, then you should read the other books in the trilogy (The Cloven Viscount is another excellent read).

And yes, you're right; Calvino and Eco often explore the same themes, only I find Calvino treats them in a quite different way... I don't know, I find his irony and sarcasm a bit closer to Collodi's style. The sad thing about Calvino's works is that the Italian school system treats them like they were made for children exclusively. Which they are not, and in fact, I came to fully appreciate them only once I reached my adult age. A pity, really.
