Coincidence is a lie.

Good evening, webizens! We interrupt our scheduled happy post on a grand adventure to an awesome indie bookstore in Delaware to bring you updates on two fails-in-progress: LiveJournal and Amazon.
All credit to
inkstone for pointing this out: LiveJournal has changed its gender options to allow users to select either "female," "male," or "it's personal." Oh wait, I thought when they apologized they said they weren't going to change the "unspecified" option! Oh wait, I guess they were lying! I'm not even surprised, but I am sort of baffled at what they changed the text to read. It seems…vindictive. Which, actually, doesn't surprise me either. And my last "LJ corporate makes me uncomfortable" post was only four days ago. Ick.
Do you remember AmazonFail, the first round? Well, they're at it again, pulling all Macmillan titles from their digital shelves due to a pricing dispute over e-books. I actually think
jonquil has a point when she says that as a company Amazon is within its rights to be vindictive about this, but I think Cat Valente makes a better point when she says that it's authors and readers who are going to suffer the consequences of this (with bonus DRM = not good!). Meanwhile,
elisem points out that Amazon has a history of gay-baiting going way back beyond April '09. Ick.
