Inception.

Damn, what a great movie. Seriously, that was just a great movie. Smart, stylish, nice action, good music (Hans Zimmer!), a thought-provoking concept, and great acting from a terrific cast of gorgeous talented people. Christopher Nolan is approaching auteur status, I think--when was the last time I was so caught up in a movie? (Well, Toy Story 3 of course, but Pixar also know what they're doing, technically.)

I know what I believe about the ending, and I think my interpretation is supported by the story itself, but of course, ultimately, it's up to the dreamer viewer to decide for herself what she believes. I can live with that.

1. Tron: Legacy. OMFG, I cannot freaking wait for this movie.
2. the social network. I cannot believe they are making this movie. I cannot believe Harvard will take that movie lying down, because you know what? It's all true. And, omg, the chorus + piano cover of "Creep" in the trailer? Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant.
3. The American. George Clooney and guns. Yup, I'm there.
4. Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps. Hmm. It could be great, or it could be awful.

My Speculation!

I've been wanting someone to talk to about this movie for days!

My theory is that Mall was right, and Cobb was still trapped in another dream level. I think she sent Ariadne to try and get Cobb out, to put an idea in his mind that he had to let go of his guilt and that would help him get out of the dream. I think this is why he was using Mall's touch-stone for reality rather than ever showing us his own (and why Ariadne's was a pawn). And this is why I think he was still dreaming at the end: because I don't think Mall is dead, and I don't think there were ever any children.

Of course, I could be wrong....

Re: the social network, I think Harvard has no real grounds to sue because they didn't film any of it on campus? (There was a discussion on a mailing list on all of the details the trailer got wrong. Haven't seen the trailer yet myself so I can't comment on it. I also heard, hilariously enough, that they asked one of Zuckerberg's old CS professors to provide a sample lecture.)

inception!!! i don't have the brainspoons (or internetspoons, really, is what it is) these days to discuss it as much as i really wish i could, but i am deeply enjoying reading everyone else's responses!

Christopher Nolan is approaching auteur status -- i thought this movie might have been his arrival at said status. but then i think about it again and i don't. i mean, whatever. i'm just a sucker for chris nolan, basically, and for his delightfully palimpsestic, meta, super-structured films. nggh.

Haven't gotten around to seeing Inception yet, but I fully intend to.

Ooh, that's right. I haven't followed any of the marketing for this movie and only have a very vague feel for it (my favorite state of mind for going into see movies, tbh), but I wanted to ask... How does Inception feel for a Darker Than Black fan? Are there any similarities in world-building, characterization or just texture and atmosphere?

I actually didn't like the ending. I know what sort of ending it was angling at, of course that would make the ending too obvious, so they went with a weak sauce ending of deflation. I can't think of a better way to end, but I wasn't satisfied with that one. Enjoyable nonetheless.

I'm glad you liked Inception! It was one of the best I've seen in a while, and you have to appreciate a movie that generates so much interesting conversation.
