starladyDamn, what a great movie. Seriously, that was just a great movie. Smart, stylish, nice action, good music (Hans Zimmer!), a thought-provoking concept, and great acting from a terrific cast of gorgeous talented people. Christopher Nolan is approaching auteur status, I think--when was the last time I was so caught up in a movie? (Well, Toy Story 3 of course, but Pixar also know what they're doing, technically.)
I know what I believe about the ending, and I think my interpretation is supported by the story itself, but of course, ultimately, it's up to thedreamer viewer to decide for herself what she believes. I can live with that.

4. Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps. Hmm. It could be great, or it could be awful.

Date: 2010-07-24 02:54 (UTC)My theory is that Mall was right, and Cobb was still trapped in another dream level. I think she sent Ariadne to try and get Cobb out, to put an idea in his mind that he had to let go of his guilt and that would help him get out of the dream. I think this is why he was using Mall's touch-stone for reality rather than ever showing us his own (and why Ariadne's was a pawn). And this is why I think he was still dreaming at the end: because I don't think Mall is dead, and I don't think there were ever any children.
Of course, I could be wrong....

Date: 2010-07-24 03:04 (UTC)My theory is that we have to trust Ariadne's name and the rest of the story--as you know Bob, she's the one who brought Theseus out of the labyrinth with the string. So when she tells Arthur that Cobb will be all right, we have to take that as truth. And at the beginning when we see Cobb wash up on shore, by the end we're supposed to realize that she was right, that Cobb did find Saitou, and that Saitou did take the leap of faith with Cobb back up the ladder of dreams to the waking world. The imperfections in the spin of the top at the end make me think it will fall eventually--and also the subconscious projections handled it when they brought Cobb to Saitou, so its objectivity as a correlative can't be trusted absolutely anymore anyway. I thought Cobb was using that as a reminder of his guilt (which I thought him using as a psychic totem was brilliant).
Was it a pawn? Interesting. I thought it was a bishop, but I didn't look closely.
But know, thinking about it, I could totally buy your interpretation too. The only thing I'd say is that we did get some scenes at the beginning that weren't from Cobb's perspective, which would require more explanation. But yeah, totally plausible--and this is where the movie becomes a Rorschach test, of course. *g*
