Yuletide 2010: What I Did Nominate

For those of you who don't know it, I wholeheartedly recommend the Chromatic Yuletide 2010 challenge hosted by dark_agenda in honor of the late skywardprodigal, who is already much missed.

So I nominated:

Disney Princess Superheroes - chromatic characters are Jasmine, Mulan, and Tinker Bell  Tiana

Magic Under Glass by Jaclyn Dolamore (white creator) - chromatic character is Nimira (pimp post/review here)

White Is for Witching by Helen Oyeyemi - chromatic creator, chromatic characters are Ore and Sade (pimp post/review here)

the Clockwork Century by Cherie Priest (white creator) - multiple chromatic characters including Croggon Hainey

and NPR RPF and Paradise Kiss, which were already nominated.

White is for Witching sounds both incredibly interesting and like it would give me nightmares. To read or not to read....

I do remember it being creepy. On the other hand, it's much, much less creepy than House of Leaves, for instance. And my tolerance for creepiness in books is rather low.

I have Oyeyemi's first novel, The Icarus Girl, on my shelf to read; that one also got rave reviews, apparently.

I have not read House of Leaves. My tolerance for creepiness is...nearly nonexistent. I may take a look at her other books first.

I usually see Tinker Bell presented as white - is she a chromatic character via her "tinker" origin? (Not arguing, BTW, just interested!)

In the actual bit of artwork that starlady requested from, Tinker Bell is being presented as black, tho it doesn't look like the artist discussed why she did that.

I don't think that character's Tinker Bell-she looks more like Tiana from "The Princess and the Frog", who was black in the original movie.

Huh. Possible. Her outfit is very suggestive of Tinker Bell to me, and otherwise Tinker Bell doesn't feature in the image at all, but you might be right.

Yeah, I've been trying to think about how I could up the chromatic character count in my nominations. It's sort of difficult to do with opera fandoms, unless we want to get into the really faily orientalist ones. And of course with modern color-blind casting we see a lot of these classic roles sung by non-white singers, but that never quite fixes the problem.

I do have plenty of chromatic sources that I'd love to see fic for, but I'm sort of skeptical that even Yuletide could produce Dhalgren fic. Hmm... I could probably swap out Six Characters in Search of an Author for Haroun and the Sea of Stories and still expect the same sort of meta-story I'm hoping for.

Oo, that's an awesome idea. I love Haroun so much.

I know someone at least nominated Triton…on the other hand I think Yuletide might be the only possible place for Dhalgren fic.

Well, I just went ahead and changed my nominations to include Dhalgren. We'll see...

Maybe this will mean that someone will write me Raizo/Mika Ninja Assassin fic. *hopeful!*

(They cause me such trouble. I desperately want fic for them but I seem to be unable to write it myself. *SADFACE* BUT THEY ARE SO CUTE.)

(Well. There's an excess of gore throughout the movie, which even I could do without, but they're worth it!)

Amusing, but alas, not fic.

(It is a ridiculous title. And in many ways it's a ridiculous movie, except that it does a number of things Really Right and one of them is Mika and Raizo's interaction and their characterization.)
