Chikahito: Oh no!
I have to get everyone up soon!

Text: I met some mysterious people when I came to Kyoto on a trip,
And for some reason I started to want to live in Kyoto, though I think it was unwillingly.

FX: Footsteps

Chikahito: Hurry! Hurry!

Chikahito: Everyone!
Breakfast is ready!

Sakura: Morning,
Chikahito-kun.

FX: Nodding

Chikahito: Good morning.

Sakura: Oh--
It's pretty, and it looks tasty.

Chikahito: I'm sorry for doing it like this--

Sakura: No, no.
It's awesome that we can eat cafe food in our house.

FX: Noogies

You really worked hard at your job, didn't you?

So,
Those two still haven't come down, huh.

Chikahito: Do you always get up early, Sakura-san?
When I called you came down immediately, and you're fully dressed…
--------------
!!! page 05
Sakura: I wasn't sleeping.

Chikahito: Huh?
Did you have some kind of errand last night?

Sakura: No.

I can't sleep.

Without body warmth.

Chikahito: …Huh?
--------------
!!! page 06
Sakura: My partner doesn't come up here, so it's fine.

Chikahita: Huh?

Huh…

Tachibana: Tea.

Chikahito: Huh?

FX: Menacing

Tachibana: Tea!

Sakura: Tachibana's horrible in the morning.

FX: Quivering

Sakura: if he eats he'll get a little brisker.

Chikahito: He's scary!

Sakura: I'll make the tea.
Can you call Hana again?

FX: Slowly

FX: Exhaling

Chikahito: Do--
Don't tell me that Hana-san
Is like Tachibana-san too…

FX: Terror
--------------
!!! page 08
Sakura: Not at all, not at all.
Well.
If Hana can sleep, Hana will always be sleeping.

FX: Uncertain

Chikahito: Then how do I--

Sakura: You have the spell, don't you?
With Hana.

Say today's menu

In a huge voice.

Chikahito: Ri--
Right.

Um, well, ham and eggs,
Consomme soup and potato salad,

Chikahito: You're welcome.
I'm glad.

FX: Slowly.

Sakura: Now then.
Shall we get on with the preparations?

Chikahito: Are you going out?
--------------
!!! page 11
Sakura: It's the male attendants' assistance.

FX: Footsteps

Chikahito: Male attendants?

Sakura: Tying the obi of the maiko and their older sisters, the geiko, of Kamishichiken. [See TN]

I really tie them tightly.
Without a man's strength, the obi will come completely apart.

Chikahito: I think I've seen that on TV!

Hana: Sakura's tied obi are pretty.

But it doesn't hurt.
--------------
!!! page 12
Chikahito: Hana-san, you'e had one tied?

Hana: Yup.

Chikahito: So Hana-san really is a girl…

Sakura: Yes?

Chikahito: She's a boy!?

Sakura: Yes--?

Chikahito: Which is it!?
--------------
!!! page 13
Tachibana: Shut up.

FX: Thump

Tachibana: We're going out.

FX: Smoothly

Chikahito: Uh, um,
Tachibana-san, are you going too? To help with the kimono?

Tachibana; A lecture.

Chikahito: Where is there a protest!? [TN: Both pronounced 'kougi.']

FX: Death-glare

Chikahito: Looking like that in the morning!?

Sakura: You may have the kanji mixed up.
--------------

Sakura: Tachibana is a college student.

FX: Fuming

Chikahito: Huh!?
Really!?

Tachibana: You got a problem with that?

FX: Shaking head

FX: Shaking head

Sakura: Tachibana and I have to go out, but
What about your school, Chikahito-kun?

Chikahito: I'll be attending starting in April for the new term.
Since it's already halfway through March, I'm on spring break.
--------------
!!! page 15
Sakura: Then
Do you have anything to do today?

FX: Footsteps

Chikahito: Not really.

Sakura: Then in that case can you keep Hana company?

FX: Footsteps

Chikahito: Huh?

Sakura: There's something I want Hana to deliver,

FX: Footstep

Sakura: But Hana alone--

When Hana is alone, Hana will drop everything and rush into a noodle shop.

Please?

Hana: Noodles!?

FX: Floppy

Chikahito: Lo--
Looks like it.

Hana: Chikahito, shall we go together?
--------------
!!! page 16
Chikahito: If you don't mind.

FX: Smiling

Hana: I'm glad.

Tachibana: Are you happy, Hana?

FX: Staring

Tachibana: ……

FX: Startled

Hana: Yup!

Sakura: Right,
The two of you go get ready.

FX: Grabbing

Chikahito: But the tidying up--

Sakura: I'll do it. Look after Hana.

FX: Whirling around.

Chikahito: Right,
Well--

FX: Footsteps

Tachibana: Hana,
It might get cold suddenly.

Wear your coat when you go.

Hana: Yup!

FX: Footsteps

Sakura: …Well,
In the middle of March, the university is on spring break,
But it looks like Chikahito-kun didn't notice that.

Tachibana: There's a lot he doesn't know.

You making a blockhead like that go, just the two of them--

Sakura: That was the hope.

For dinner?

Huh!?

FX: Vanished

Chikahito: Hana-san!

FX: Wow

[TN: As well as being an actual restaurant (and one of my absolute favorite restaurants in Kyoto), Gogyou is named for the Five Elements theory.]

FX: Running

Chikahito: Wait,

Hana: Hidetsugu!

Chikahito: Huh?

Hidetsugu: Yes,
I'm called Hidetsugu,
Chikahito-chan.

So,
Is there something you wanted to buy?

Hana: Noodles!

Hidetsugu: That's always what you want, Hana.

Chikahito: Huh?
Huh?
--------------
!!! page 24
Waiter: …Smoked miso ramen,
Soy sauce and pork belly ramen,

FX: Oh…

And salt ramen.
Sorry for the wait. [TN: This is a stock phrase]

Hidetsugu: First the smoked miso, okay?
If it's not enough, you can order another one.

FX: Nodding

Hana: Time to eat!

Chikahito: Ti--time to eat.

HIdetsugu: Go on, go on!

FX: Slurping

Chikahito: Yeah, there's something sketchy about him.
--------------
!!! page 25
Hidetsugu: Is it good,
Hana?

FX: Nodding

Hidetsugu: Since this is an izakaya, their nabe is probably delicious too.

Hana, you'll eat the noodles first, though.

Chikahito-chan, how's yours?

Chikahito: It's delicious.

Say,
How do you know my name?

Hidetsugu: That's because you're the new resident of the Ura-Shichiken.
--------------
!!! page 26
Chikahito: Um,

Hidetsugu-san,
That is--

Hidetsugu: I'm the owner of that place.
The present one.

Chikahito: I'm sorry to not have introduced myself.

Since I'll be living there from now on--

Hidetsugu: No, don't worry about it.
Hana called you against your will, right?
Using the myouhou--
--------------
!!! page 27
Hana: Yup,
I called him.

Hidetsugu: That's why I wanted to meet you,

And see what it is about you that Hana likes so much.

Hana: Chikahito is the same as Hana.

!!! page 28
Chikahito: Huh?

FX: Hmm?

Hidetsugu: Tachibana
Said that he had no special ability, right?

Hana: Yup.

Is there something with me that…

This means
That you can do it too, Hidetsugu-san.

Hidetsugu: Huh?

Chikahito: Making
This weird space? Looks like it.

Hidetsugu: Well, I can't do it
Like Sakura, and cover a wide range perfectly,

But if I have a blood-sealed oni with me, I can usually do it. [TN: 'Oni' is written 'hidden menace,' but it means 'spirit' here]
--------------
!!! page 35
Chikahito: A demon!?

FX: Heart pounding

Hidetsugu: No, no.

You don't know anything, huh,
Chikahito-chan.

FX: Flapping hands

Chikahito: Is this…
Is this common knowledge for Kyoto people!?

Hidetsugu: It's probably not common knowledge, but--
--------------
!!! page 36-37

Although the Gion district is the most famous 'geisha' district in Kyoto, there are actually four others that survive around the city. The Kamishichiken 'geisha' district is right next to Kitano Tenmanguu, where our heroes live. Kyoto people actually say 'geiko' and 'maiko' for 'geisha' and 'apprentice geisha.' You can tell geiko and maiko apart because geiko wear their obi completely tied up, as opposed to in a train, wear normal height shoes, and wear wigs, as well as less elaborate hair ornaments. This picture shows the geiko and a maiko of Kamishichiken serving tea at the Kitano Tenmanguu shrine, 24 February 2008 (this is a yearly event). My single best picture from Japan is of two Gion maiko (taken with permission in May 2008).

There's a certain in-joke in Chikahito asking Tachibana, a college student, where the protest is; Kyoto is a college town, and Kyoto University, one of the four most prestigious universities in Japan, is well-known as a leftist hotbed. The police still keep rather close tabs on the student socialist organizations, and if there's going to be a protest in Kyoto, odds are it's going to start or end at Kyodai, as it's called.

Man, Hidetsugu totally reminds me of Seishirou.

I'm going running, and then there will be coffee and a shower, come hell or high water.
