The Avengers (2012)

OH MY GOD THAT WAS AMAZING
I went to see this with
epershand,
kuwdora, and my two roommates N, and 5 is an awkward number to seat at a sold-out screening when you only get there 50 minutes beforehand, so we had to kind of run (nice hustle, N!) to get seats, and wound up sitting 3 and 2 - I was next to a very cynical, hilarious comics fanboy and really I think the entire theater had an amazing time. I love seeing movies in sell-out crowds of fellow feelers. We clapped at trailers! We clapped at the good parts! We laughed and groaned at the funny and terrible parts! We clapped and cheered at the end! We gasped at the first stinger! We cheered and laughed at the second stinger! And we cheered the visual FX companies in the credits, because we are just that nerdy. Oh god it was great.
This is just a great movie! Like, a legitimately awesome movie! Lots of action, lots of really good character moments, funny dialogue! What more can you want? It does totally fail the Bechdel test, as someone pointed out on my r-list this morning, but on the other hand I was legitimately impressed at how awesome the female characters were, and how relatively unsexualized Natasha's costuming was in particular, and how she just kicked ass, period, no qualifiers! They even did right by Maria Hill, who is one of the most inconsistent characters in comics imo. Also Nick Fury, oh my god, stone-cold bastard y/y? YES.
OH MY GOD NATASHA ROMANOFF. Clint! Natasha! "You and I remember Budapest very differently!" I suddenly have a new bulletproof het OTP, they are just so amazing! And they kick so much ass despite completely baseline human, YES.
And also Bruce Banner! "I'm angry all the time." YES. I have never much cared about the Hulk but he totally sold it, I love him and Tony nerding out together.
Also Tony and Pepper! They were great, and also Tony, and the way his issues are just a little bit better controlled at this point, and the way he did the reading, and him and Steve, YES.
That Steve Rogers, he's smarter than he looks! Oh Steve, you are so great, and so very alone at the beginning of this movie, and maybe a little less alone now.
OH MY GOD THEY KILLED COULSON. You could have heard a pin drop in the theater in that entire scene. At least he went out like a badass. I knew Joss Whedon was going to kill somebody.
epershand proved why I love her forever because during the credits she spontaneously quoted Catullus 81 to describe her reaction to them killing Coulson, and then she even tolerated me arguing with her about how to translate quando.
I have now been Jossed by Joss Whedon. BRB frantically rewriting half the scenes in Reunion!
In conclusion, can it be Avengers 2 now? Or maybe I will just go see this again, after I finish my paper. In the meantime I am totally having chicken shwarma for lunch. YOU KNOW WHY.

I mean -- look. I'm not a shipper. I like romances between characters, but I don't get invested in them in the "I want fic of this" kind of way.
UNTIL NOW.
Seriously. I want Hawkeye/Black Widow fic. And all of a sudden I understand the whole "shipping" thing. :-D

Date: 2012-05-05 19:09 (UTC)I kid, I kid. I do feel the writing sufficiently demonstrated that it took Natasha seriously as a person that I was satisfied on that level, but that only partly makes up for the fact that it fails the Bechdel test because there are only two females out of 11 named characters and they never had any reason to talk to each other. I can't even blame this on comics misogyny: there are actually a bunch of female heroes associated with the Avengers. They just apparently aren't good enough for the movieverse.
Also, the above comment wasn't meant as a knock on Clint and Natasha. I will watch them braid each others' hair any day.

Date: 2012-05-06 14:32 (UTC)We enjoyed ourselves a lot. It was a good crowd. Clint and Natasha really were awesome. I will take a movie about the two of them without a problem.
This movie was amazing.
