What I'm reading
As promised, I started Celestial Matters by Richard Garfinkle. It's an alternate history SF book told from the perspective of the scientific commander of a sunship of the Delian League, which in the 935th year since its founding is still locked in a war with the Middle Kingdom. (I just realized, typing this out, that the origin story Aias, the aforementioned commander, tells in the grove at the Akademe doesn't jive with our world's history, because China wasn't unified when Alexander went on his Indian campaign.) The conceit is that Aristotelian physics hold true, so it's a terracentric universe and the sunships ascend through the spheres. Aias, like Prometheus, is planning to steal fire from the heavens and bring it back to earth. It's cool so far! There hasn't been much about the Chinese side so far except WAR KITES. I am a sucker for WAR KITES.
What I've just read
I finished The Secret Service by Wendy Walker. Strange, amazing, unique. I will write a full post on it, but suffice it to say that if you have access to ILL or a university library--WorldCat shows that quite a few university libraries have copies in their holdings--I really recommend it. I'm absolutely shocked that there's no e-book available, to be quite honest. Given the prices used copies command online, it would seem to be a no-brainer for Walker to put one out.
What I'll read next
I don't even know. I have Black Wine by Candace Dorsey out from the library, so I need to read that. I also need to read the next two volumes of Ôoku (eight and nine, for those keeping track at home). And a million other things. Ideally something YA and quick. Possibly The Girl of Fire and Thorns.
