starlady: Kermit the Frog, at Yuletide (yuletide)
[personal profile] starlady
Dear Yuletide writer,

First, thank you so much for participating in Yuletide this year! Second, thank you for agreeing to write a story in a fandom we both love, or at least remember fondly. I'm genuinely interested to see what caught other fans' interests about all of these sources, so please don't feel that my prompts are too binding. I'd rather have an inspired story than slavish devotion to my requests. If you're looking for more of a sense of me and my tastes, skimming through the last twenty entries on my DW will probably give you a good idea; most of the entries in general are unlocked.

I hesitate to say what I do or don't like in fic--I don't have any major squicks, and no firm principles as to what I will or won't read. That said, it's my general sentiment that Yuletide is not the place to go looking for PWP, at least for me; which isn't to say that I wouldn't want sexytimes, as it were, in any story you write, but which is to say that I generally like my sexytimes to go along with plot and characterization. And as you may have guessed from these requests, I do really like women being awesome. In some ways, really, my own fics demonstrate both these preferences very well.

Europa Report (2013)

I really, really, really loved this movie when it came out, and I really loved the female characters and how real and how awesome they were. Anything featuring any of these three, separately or together, pre- or post- or in-movie, would be awesome. I'm particularly interested in the story of what happens to Samantha Unger after the Europa report is released, but please go wherever your own spirit of discovery takes you. Post tenebras, lux.

You can read my review of the movie if you like; suffice it to say that I think it's one of the best science fiction movies I've seen in years, and a really excellent example of letting science drive a perfectly science fictional story. I loved it so much, and you can rent it on iTunes or the Play store, I believe, if you're curious!

Gate 7

Oh, this fandom. Basically I want fic about the moment when Chikahito realizes he's completely in love with Hana, regardless of hir gender. Or about Chikahito learning to adjust to Kyoto (the real Kyoto, not the one in his head), or the epic kink that is Date's relationship with his oni, whatever is cool. Or about Tachibana getting it on with basically everyone, apparently. I translated most of the first three volumes, and you can see the map of Kyoto I made to go with it on those posts. (If I ever read the next volumes, I'll update it.) Kyoto is one of my favorite places in the world.

I love this manga quite a lot, between the prettiness and the fact that it's set in Kyoto and the fact that it's about revived warlords from the late middle ages dueling it out for the strongest power in the world!…or something. I have to admit that I would totally not mind a PWP fic in this fandom, because as far as I can tell the kink practically leaps off the page, with just about every character, though I do find the emotional heart of the story so far to be Chikahito and Hana's connection, and I'd love to see something exploring their relationship. Um. Am I being helpful at all? Anything at all would be awesome, that's all I'm saying.

Ôoku: The Inner Chambers

I'm interested in anything you would want to write, dear author, but the straightwashing of actual history in the manga, and the fact that only heterosexual relationships are depicted unambiguously in the actual story, is starting to annoy me. I'd really like a story about actually lesbian lady officials of the shogunate, or Edo townspeople, or at any level of society, really--kabuki actors or whatever are great too!

I haven't talked about the straigthwashing in the manga very much publicly yet, but this post and the Wednesday post before it go into some of it. Suffice it to say that Ôoku is in some ways less queer than the actual Edo period, and I would love to see that imbalance redressed.

Space Vehicles

I put the Voyager crafts in the character lists because I am embarrassingly attached to them, and the thought of both of them going bravely into the dark alone gives me a lot of feels, so I'd love a story about either or both of them, either their present or their future, real or imagined. But I'd also love a story about any of the characters in this fandom. The robots we've sent out to explore for us are pretty great.

I read a lot of National Geographic when I was a very small child, and the retrospective article on the Voyager missions in 1987(?) was one of the ones I read and reread obsessively. (Until about the age of sixteen, I was certain I would be an astronomer, and that is part of why.) I learned my love of space exploration from the Voyager crafts in some ways, and the fact that one of them starred in Star Trek: The Motion Picture is a big part of why I still like that movie more than anyone probably really should. (And yes, if you want to write the story of how Voyager becomes V'ger, I would be totally on board with that.) In some ways Voyager and its fellows represent the best of us, and I just really love them a lot.

I hope you can find enough information in here or in the fandoms to inspire you, Yuletide writer. Thank you so much!
