Has Watanuki taken physical harm on himself as part of his dealings with customers? It would serve him right for locking himself up instead of actively helping others like he was before. It isn't right to hide from the world like that--especially when so many people can't.

No, he definitely can't leave the shop at this point. I was referring to how, while Yuuko was alive, he was able to help so many people and spirits--the oden fox and his son, the twins, the crazy cooking lady, Kohane, Himawari...it seems as though he would have been better able to continue Yuuko's work by staying outside of the shop, rather than staying within it and waiting for people to come to him.

After all, Yuuko did leave the shop on many occasions.

I think you're right, though the question is, if he hadn't taken over the shop, would people come to him at all?

But yeah, I really think that Watanuki needs to be able to leave. I mean, he chose to stay, but given that he couldn't leave, it was more of a fait accompli than he's let himself acknowledge.

The "marinate" line means that Doumeki entered the shop four years ago and hasn't really left, since he lives there. And the line about "portions" refers to the fact that Doumeki's drunk a lot, essentially.

I think we'll find out what happened in those four years eventually, if it's important.
