Yeah, he is dating someone, as if the "Welcome home"/"I'm home" exchange didn't make Doumeki's thoughts on the situation painfully obvious.

I will say this, though it's mostly a rhetorical question: why are the human customers always women?

And finally, Mokona is my hero.

why are the human customers always women?

I think CLAMP said somewhere before, and I'm paraphrasing from memory which is very hazy, that their editor(?) wanted them to make as many female characters as possible since it was running in a men's magazine. Also, they said something about not wanting too many male characters because other male characters might completely steamroll Watanuki. I think.

Hmm, that sounds like something an editor would say. And I kind of had that sense about possible male characters myself. But I do wish they would have at least one human male customer at some point. Though if they ever do it'll probably be a kid.

Thanks!

Thanks for the translation! I missed them :')

I always saw it as my history teacher once phrased it for me, "women are more vile" -- and, he saw it historically in that women used some of the vilest things to get their ways, but I later saw that it fit well with Holic. After all, most of the women's wishes were a bit extreme. The woman here is a great example.

(And hush, I have a dream wherein Doumeki has a secret boy/girlfriend that nobody knows about. Either that, or he's the best archer/pimp in the city.)

I think historically women tended to be more extreme because they were denied a lot of the less extreme options, and I don't think that's fully rectified yet, either, which is part of why there still are so many women coming to the shop.

(I think the secret significant other is Watanuki.)

I wonder how the Japanese see it... I remember most of the older animes (that dealt with either history or folklore) portrayed the angry, vengeful woman as the source of the harm and is, most probably, not human. Culturally, to me, women are almost always connected to harmful wishes (like the one here) and ill-doing. But then again, CLAMP might have really just went with it for the male readers *grins*.

(I don't think we're working on "vague" with CLAMP anymore. Wonder if it can get any more ambiguous than this.)

Yeah, one thing that does bother me about CLAMP is their attitude towards their female characters...at times it borders on what's called fannish misogyny in media fandom.

Based on Japanese translation, I finally understood whom Doumeki is "dating". It seems that on my POV, he's "dating" Kohane-chan, since Watanuki wanted to warned her about this. Call me disgusting or something, we all know that there's one characters from CCS that they have huge age gap. I'm not rooting for them, *Douwata fan here" but I'm saying it is possible.

Then again, it is vague ... Thanks for the translation :)

You know, I hadn't thought that the dating rumors might refer to Kohane, but that is totally plausible too. I don't think CLAMP are actually writing that relationship, though--they are clearly on board the Doumeki/Watanuki train, I think.

Dou and Kimi see Kohane as a little sister or even as a daughter so i don't think as plausible too!

And Clamp had being pretty obvious about Doumeki affections, he had being in love with Watanuki almost from day 1!

Yuuko was always was on Doumeki's side too for Kimihiro....So the forever question is Kimi did, does or will do something about it?

Well, Yuuko did get male customers: Fay, Kurogane, Syaoran(clone), Syaoran(father)and Syaoran|Tsubasa(son), Seishirou, Ashura Oh, Fuuma etc?
I do understand what you mean when saying there are only female customers though, I've wondered about the exact same thing too.

Interesting enough all the characters you mentioned are connected to TRC and some of them don't even show up in holic... maybe it's really due to the target series, even if CLAMP did the same with TB... Subaru deals with much more females than males (though he interacted with male clients a couple of times...)

(no subject)

Date: 2010-09-20 21:07 (UTC)
From: [identity profile] starlady38.livejournal.com
Yeah, I do think that there's a societal element to who comes to people like Subaru or Yuuko and Watanuki--women have less agency in the human world, so they have to turn to the otherworld to get what they want (or so Yanagita Kunio thought; see below).

Oh, Doumeki. "I'm home." It's all the little things you do that get me.

I had the same thought about all the female customers, unsure if it was an editor pushing for it or some form of sexism (only women wish for things, or what-have-you.)

(no subject)

Date: 2010-09-20 21:03 (UTC)
From: [identity profile] starlady38.livejournal.com
It occurs to me that at one point Yanagita Kunio did theorize that women have more influence in the otherworld, because they have less agency in the human world and so as a gender made a habit out of beseeching the otherworld for things they couldn't do for themselves in the human world. So, I do think there is an element of gender inequality here (which is why for me the question was partly rhetorical ^^).

You already got several answers for your (mostly rhetorical!) question, but as for CLAMP's own reasoning behind having only female customers, they were worried that male ones would overshadow Watanuki. (In retrospect, Watanuki really did have a dishwashy, thin character early on in the series, but technically now we could have some male customers...)

I feel kind of sorry for the customer this time around.

I think there's a really clear implication that she's sort of a potential Lady Rokuj├┤, from Genji--the Heian references, and the fact that Watanuki is writing a ward for Doumeki, make me think that we're supposed to understand that Doumeki is in danger of being haunted if she doesn't get a grip on herself. Not sure whether she'd be able to possess him, since he is a man, and spirit possession is generally a woman's weapon/injury.

And yeah about the male customers; also see above for what Yanagita Kunio has to say on the matter. ;-)

Admittedly, I still have an incredibly negative view of Watanuki's character (a lot more negative than canon, given his treatment of that unborn child and all the talk of his becoming "purer" in spirit), so I quickly assumed that he didn't want to lose his meal ticket to somebody else. Your translation and the Genji Monogatari reference made the customer's position a lot clearer, though!

It would definitely be fascinating if CLAMP was drawing from Yanagita in making so many characters in xxxHOLiC female. (I myself have always wondered why so many of the spirits themselves have been depicted as women, too.)

ohh i was so worried when i saw that she wants DOU!!!
because what Kimi could do, or say, that he is taken already!

really my heart falter a little

Doumeki had being in love with Kimi for too many years!, but i found plausible than others could think he dates Kohane.( she is closer to him after all)
But we all know that Kohane is like a little sister or even almost a daughter for them.

Doumeki even stay in the shop everytime he could, even if Kimi never acknowledge the love is mutual. I think Doumeki will never stop loving Watanuki and being at his side.

I hope this open the eyes of Watanuki about how he could feel if Doumeki was taking for someone else.
