[personal profile] epershand, "I Am Not a Camera" by W.H. Auden (with context)

[personal profile] azuire in [community profile] poetry, "The Flight of Birds" by Meena Kandasamy

[personal profile] lnhammer has been posting translations of the poems of the Kokinshu, one of the two foundational collections of Japanese poetry, every day for a while now. He's recently taken a break to do the poetry of Ono no Komachi, who was awesome, and his translations of her work, and of all the other poems, are really good.

"Political" in the best, very broad sense of the term, that is.

So, most of you have probably heard about the ass-hattery that was Elizabeth Moon's recent post on "assimilation." She's locked the post and/or comments on it, and I refuse to link to her anyway, but more important than her are the constructive responses coming out of this latest...I never know what word to use. Round of fail? That'll do.

Moon is currently slated to be one of the two Guests of Honor at Wiscon 35. The other is Nisi Shawl, and she is thoroughly awesome--who else remembers her doing an a capella rendition of Michael Jackson at the Galactic Marmalade party? That was awesome. I'm going to read her books, and I've created a feed for her blog, which is on LJ, here on DW: [syndicated profile] nisi_la_feed

Other people worth reading, with their selected responses (though of course, this list is not exhaustive):

[personal profile] coffeeandink also has a post brainstorming ideas for panels at Wiscon 35

[personal profile] yeloson has a post about Hate

[personal profile] shveta_writes has a post called All Right

[personal profile] glass_icarus, on the politics of possession

and on LJ, [livejournal.com profile] shweta_narayan has a post on Dissimilation

And to round out this post with happier (fannish) things, [community profile] eid_ka_chand, a comm for fictional Muslim characters & Islam in fiction. The comm's Eid-al-Fitr 2010 fanworks challenge raised over $1200 to help Pakistan!
starlady: the DW logo in red against a blurred background (dreamwidth)
[personal profile] rydra_wong is awesome in general, and has a Follow Friday post for new people with lots of useful information about DW.

[community profile] access_fandom is a comm for talking about accessibility and disability in fandom

[community profile] animanga_news is a great newsletter collecting animanga news on DW

[community profile] bicycles -- a comm about bicycles, and the people who use and love them

[community profile] clampnews -- just like the LJ comm of the almost-same name

[community profile] dark_agenda -- a comm for promoting chromatic sources and characters in fandom

[site community profile] dw_nifty -- lots of nifty tips and tricks for making DW cooler, including the DW barcode generator

[community profile] fandomcalendar -- all the scheduled events of fandom brought right to you!

[community profile] metafandom -- and all of fandom's discussions

[community profile] runners -- a supportive comm for people who run, no matter the distance

[community profile] scans_daily -- you may remember this comm from its heyday on LJ. it's just as great on DW.

and the Follow Friday tag feed, which collects all posts tagged with 'follow friday' or 'followfriday' on a 5-minute delay.
starlady: "Where's your sister?" "She's on Jupiter, Mom." (sister's on jupiter)
[community profile] animanga_news is an awesome newsletter on DW that attempts to bring together all the animanga-related posts on the site. The coverage is pretty thorough; it's a great comm. *applause for the maintainer*

[syndicated profile] cupcake_muffin_feed is my housemate. She is a really good cook and baker, and this is her food blog.

[syndicated profile] fanhackers_feed is the blog of Transformative Works and Cultures, the peer-reviewed online-only academic journal affiliated with the OTW. If you are interested in fandom as a phenomenon, you should read this blog.

[personal profile] jonquil and [personal profile] cofax7 are the two California linkspammers, fic-writers, and generally conscientious posters I read.

And I can't forget [personal profile] rachelmanija for hilarious, telling-it-like-it-is book reviews.

starlady: An octopus solving a Rubik's cube. (original of the species)
There is a spider that lives in my car. A few weeks ago it wove a perfect web in miniature on my left side mirror, but I thought it (the spider, not the web) got blown off on 295. But this morning when I got in the car I saw that it was still there: it had woven a perfect, foot-square web in the windowframe area on the passenger side. In retrospect, I think the spider bit me a few weeks ago. That's not very neighborly, arachnid friend.

In more important news, [community profile] access_fandom is hosting Festibility, a low-pressure fanworks fest celebrating disabled characters! More information including a long list of canonically disabled characters (including some you didn't know about, I bet) at this post.

(Partly under the influence of that list it occurs to me actually that I wrote two fics featuring disabled characters for Yuletide '09, and that I have a fic in progress focusing on another disabled character.)

Thanks for the birthday wishes, all!! You are awesome.

For Follow Friday, I have to rec [community profile] monstrous_regiment, a community for military history, fandom, and culture from a female perspective.

If anyone is interested, I have two extra tickets to see The Arcade Fire + Spoon at the Mann Center in Philadelphia on August 2, 2010 that I need to find a good home for. After fees the face value is $41 each or $82 for the pair, which is all I'm asking.

And now I'm going to go pick up my reg packet for my 8K tomorrow morning, and then make a quiche, and then, damn it, I am going to finish my Holmes Big Bang story. I think it's only another eight thousand words or so. I hope.

Follow Friday!

[syndicated profile] obamadaily_feed never fails to make me happy, because our First Family is awesome and we as a country can do the right thing on occasion.

[community profile] clampnews - because I've been posting my translations there, too. Other Clamp fans on DW? You know you want to join!

[community profile] queering_holmes - this comm is awesome, QED.

[personal profile] inkstone gets the nod this week for the Small Fandoms Friending Meme and general awesomeness.

[personal profile] jonquil frequently has interesting things to say (though the crafting posts go over my head, because I am not a crafting person at all); I really liked this essay on science fiction, despite my being at least a generation younger.

[personal profile] damned_colonial on general principles, and also for this post on mixing romance with war stories which is giving me thinky-thoughts about militarism.

I have five million things to do and only time for one or two, augh.

starlady: (shiny)
[community profile] followfriday - how have I not recced the comm for this until now?

[community profile] three_weeks_for_dw - three weeks of DW-exclusive content, all awesome.

[community profile] queering_holmes - fandom in the interstices between scholarship and squee, the sort of purposeful (mis)reading for which i love fandom in the first place. ♥

[community profile] clampnews is crossposting from DW now! mwa ha ha!

[community profile] animanga_news - a pan-animanga newsletter, and pretty awesome.

[community profile] rocket_to_the_future - I just joined this community for space exploration and travel, living in the future, and transhumanism.

Also, on the book fandom front, I've been contemplating the idea of importing [livejournal.com profile] youngwizards, and also possibly creating a Megan Whalen Turner comm along the lines of [livejournal.com profile] sounis. Thoughts?
starlady: the DW logo in red against a blurred background (dreamwidth)
[community profile] 36_stratagems: A fic fest based on the 36 Strategies. Seems pretty cool, I have to say, and appealingly low-key. (I signed up yesterday.)

[community profile] ladiesbigbang: A big bang fest for characters who self-define as women! I'm probably signing up for this one too.

[community profile] sagarawest: A comm for readers and fans of Michelle Sagara West and her books! (I am a co-admin.)

[community profile] atheist_fandom: Does what it says on the tin.

starlady: the DW logo in red against a blurred background (dreamwidth)
Short and sweet today.

[personal profile] snarp  - one of the smartest people on manga I've read. Just today gave us Bleach and power fantasies and Bleach vs. Women.

[personal profile] rachelmanija  - for all your snarky book review needs, with a liberal dose of awesomely bad books, now on DW!

[community profile] steampunk_nusantara - I think this comm goes with N.K. Jemisin's story "The Effluent Engine" under the heading Steampunk Done Right.

and since I'm about to post about Lord Sunday there, [community profile] thebainherald - for all your Garth Nix needs on DW! Fanworks, discussion and related posts welcome!

starlady: the DW logo in red against a blurred background (dreamwidth)
Well, me and the doctor's mother. We're the A team!

[personal profile] naraht has started [community profile] up_at_oxford , a ficathon about characters and historical people who canonically attended Oxford University. Go forth and prompt!

[personal profile] elke_tanzer has started [community profile] midlands_fanworks, a comm for the Legend of the Seeker TV show. And possibly for the books by which it is loosely inspired too?

The rest are self-explanatory, which is good because I'm fried.

[community profile] books

starlady: the DW logo in red against a blurred background (dreamwidth)
Here's the plan: every Friday, let's recommend some people and/or communities to follow on Dreamwidth. That's it. No complicated rules, no "pass this on to 7.328 friends or your cat will die". Just introduce us to some new things to read.

All about feeds this week! Most of these are LJ accounts.

[syndicated profile] neilgaiman_feed- Neil Gaiman's blog, straight to DW.

[syndicated profile] beatonna_feed - Kate Beaton's comics journal

[syndicated profile] rebecca_dart_feed - Art journal of Rebecca Dart, who does some of the funniest, and best, fantasy art I've seen. Attack kittens! That's all you need to know.

[syndicated profile] yuki_onna_feed - Cat Valente's LJ

[syndicated profile] karen_healey_feed - LJ of Karen Healey, book reviewer, comics scholar and author of Guardian of the Dead

[community profile] copper_street - A community inviting people to commit to a word-count writing goal and fulfill it in 2010. I picked TIer 3 (150K words). Eep.

[community profile] fandomcalendar - Keep track of events in the fan community.

[site community profile] dw_community_promo - A good way to keep abreast of new DW communities.

and last but not least...

[community profile] thebainherald - A community for all your Garth Nix fandom interests and needs!

starlady: (coraline)
[personal profile] kaigou, whose brain (and in particular the analyses it produces) is a thing of wonder. Recent posts on fanfiction versus original fiction, as well as the attractions of m/m fiction, have been particularly awesome. Not to mention Dreamwidth styles galore, occasional anime fan thoughts, and assorted miscellaneous awesomeness. I've learned a lot, and been given whole feasts of food for thought, reading.

Same name on LJ, too.
